Webex Calling Hunt Group Designer

Design a hunt group that actually gets answered: ring style, member order, no-answer timeout, overflow to voicemail/AA/external, plus business/after-hours schedule.

What this tool does

Hunt groups that don't leak calls

Most hunt groups fail because the overflow is missing — caller rings all members, no one picks up, call drops, customer calls a competitor. This tool picks the right ring style for your use case, sets sensible no-answer timing, and wires an explicit overflow path so every call ends up somewhere.

Deep dive

Ring style: the choice that drives fairness

Regular always rings member #1 first; fine when #1 is a senior rep who handles overflow naturally, terrible for fairness. Circular rotates after each answer — member who just took a call goes to the back of the line. Uniform is like circular but by time: least-recently-called gets the next ring. This is the fairest but can feel random to members. Simultaneous rings everyone at once — great for critical response teams, terrible for 20-person groups (chaos). Weighted lets you assign percentages per member; useful when some reps handle 2× the load of others.

Ring seconds per member is often set too high. 20 seconds is about 5 rings, which is plenty. Anything longer and callers hang up before overflow triggers. If you want longer total time, set 15 seconds per member × 4 members = 60 seconds total before overflow. Test from a real cell phone, not your desk, to feel the caller's experience.

Overflow is the real test. Always send to voicemail at minimum — never "busy tone" unless you're trying to discourage calls. For reception lines, overflow to a secondary group, then after-hours answering service. For support, overflow to a shared voicemail that pages the on-call engineer via email-to-SMS. The chain should have a clear endpoint — "voicemail" should always be the last fallback, not an endless loop of hunt groups.
