Score your CUBE hardening. Covers ACLs, trusted IPs, toll fraud prevention, DoS protection, rate limiting, cert integrity, and logging — the 20 items that matter.
Most CUBE compromises come from three sources: open signaling ports, unauthenticated registrar exposure, and wide-open toll fraud patterns. This checklist scores 20 items, flags gaps, and emits the IOS-XE commands that fix them.

Toll fraud against SIP trunks follows a predictable pattern: attacker scans port 5060 on your public IP, finds an OPTIONS response from CUBE, attempts SIP REGISTER with weak or default credentials, then starts dialing international premium-rate numbers. You wake up to a $20,000 invoice. Prevention is layered: (1) never expose 5060/5061 to the public internet unless you have to — peer with carrier via direct circuit or IP ACL. (2) If you must expose, restrict the source IP. (3) Enforce strong registrar credentials if you use SIP REGISTER. (4) Block outbound international by default; whitelist countries/patterns.
CAC (Call Admission Control) and rate limiting: most carriers charge per-minute. If a script triggers 200 concurrent calls to Sierra Leone, you lose thousands in 10 minutes. Set voice class call-threshold to cap concurrent calls. Also set voice call send-alert and SNMP trap on trunk utilization > 80% so you get paged before the damage is done.
PSIRT discipline: Cisco publishes Security Advisories for IOS-XE (notable recent ones: 2023 WebUI privilege escalation, multiple SIP-related CVEs). Subscribe to the Cisco PSIRT RSS and schedule quarterly review. Running on IOS-XE 17.6 in 2026 is asking for trouble — upgrade to 17.9+ LTS minimum. The difference between a patched CUBE and an un-patched one is often the difference between a compromised call routing system and a secure one.
Usually yes if it terminates internet-facing SIP. Internal CUBE between CUCM + private carrier circuit doesn't need DMZ.
ACL to carrier IP + outbound dial peer that blocks international (+011, +44, etc) by default.
Yes — keepalive confirms trunk health; random offset prevents thundering herd.
Yes if 5060 UDP is exposed. Either firewall-block unsolicited inbound or use TCP/TLS.
ACL + CAC + outbound limit.
Default install, no hardening.
Full hardening after breach.
